YOUNITY Presents FRESHER Gallery Show in NYC

On Saturday, October 3rd, women’s street art collective YOUNITY hosted the opening party for their third annual FRESHER Art Show at New York’s Clemente Soto Velez Cultural & Educational Center in the Lower East Side. Billed as an “eco-inspired” street art show, FRESHER combines elements of natural resources, graffiti, photography, fashion & jewelry design, and even trash to express messages about preserving the earth.

True to its name, FRESHER presented fresh ideas and viewpoints about consumerism, environmentalism, politics, and health using unique canvases such as broken skate decks, unraveled VHS cassette tapes, and discarded cardboard boxes. And despite the heavy subtext of the show’s environmental message, fun was certainly had by all. Renowned break dancer Ana “Rokafella” Garcia and singer/MC Amanda Diva were among those in attendance, and DJ Elle kept the crowd grooving to a stellar blend of mid-nineties hip-hop.

The event was certainly a success for YOUNITY, which was created by artists Alice Mizrachi and TOOFLY to give contemporary female urban artists a platform to showcase work to both their art world peers and the public-at-large.

The FRESHER Exhibition, which showcases the work of over 40 female artists, including legendary graf artist Lady Pink, Martha Cooper, SHIRO, Diana McClure, Sophia Maldonado, Aiko, Kerri O’Connell, LICHIBAN, Krista Franklin, Kelly Denato, China Morbosa, and Amanda Lopez, runs until October 23, 2009.
