David Hockney iPhone Art!

72 year old Brit pop artist, David Hockney, is unafraid of new technologies. Hockney has begun using his iPhone and the “Brushes” app to create tiny digital works of art that he sends to friends.

Hockney compares the medium to painting with light or stained glass and finds it particularly suited to painting sunrises because he can actually see his canvas and paints in the dark on the illuminated screen.

The New York Review of Books‘ Lawrence Weschler interviews the artist about his new discovery and includes an audio slide show.

“People from the village,” [Hockney] says, craning back over that shoulder, “come up to me and tease me, ‘We hear you’ve started drawing on your telephone.’ And I tell them, ‘Well, no, actually, it’s just that occasionally I speak on my sketch pad.'”
