Day 2
By Roben Kleene &

Day2 was more crowded than the first day, with more stuff appearing gradually. Read on for more of the latest as we focus on more HK artists and toy companies: TOY2R Toy2R is easily the most prolific HK toy company operating these days. President of Toy2R Raymond Choy has got to be the hardest working man in the HK toy biz these days and it shows. The Toy2R booth had more going on this Con than anyone else on the floor and all of it is first rate stuff.
First up are Qees, Qees, Qees. Ever since their conception Qees have been taking the mini figure world by storm. The Toy2R booth had tons on display, including some yet to be released upcoming items such as the Qee band and Designer Series 1 (which features over 50% third party artist designs). KidRobot's own Brooklyn Series 1 is among them, including original designs by well-known Brooklyn-based artists Tristan Eaton, Lucas Irwin (Filth), Maze, Mark Dancey and Jason Brown. Also unvieled was the brand new 8" Qee design, these big vinyl suckers look great in the display cases and felt even better to hold in your hand. Some were done up with older Qee designs, others were some incredible original designs done specifically for the show. The 8" Qee above is a demo version based on art by KidRobot's associate Filth.
Raymond also had some of the long awaited Boyers on hand, about 5" tall -- it looks like Toyer has got a little brother to pick on now! Finally Toy2R's newest vinyl design Knuckle-Bear by Touma was unvieled. The prototype on display looked great and we can't wait to see what the figure looks like once he's wearing a paint job! Other new items on display included, the new Egg Qee design, a Toy2R edition of Takumi's sick Rock Rabbit, and several color variants of bobble-headed (and armed) Toyers. |

JASON SIU & CO. On sale at the Jason Siu & Co booth was the first figure in his newest series, Scratching with Gravity. DJ Jimmie is a big hairy armed hip hop warrior that comes packed with his very own wheels of steel (turntables and a mixer for the laymen). Jason also had prototypes for Monkey's Playground series 2 on display and was taking pre-orders. These look to be some of Jason's best designs yet, the threads are tight as usual, but the real treat here are the accessories. Da Da and Kurt come with incredibly detailed boom boxes and DJ Bass has got a three pieces turntables and a mixer set. The chrome literally glistens on all of these! Look for 'em on KidRobot at the beginning of February. The display in front of Jason's booth was stunning -- it included full-size (human scale) figures, two with Jason's characteristic speakers for heads. This afternoon at the Con, Jason had a troupe of hip hop dancers bust some moves on the stage to promote his upcoming "Freefloor" Series of 12-inch figures. A couple of the dancers are the real-life inspirations for the figures. |

CRAZYSMILES/MICHAEL LAU Waiting in line for Lau's
day two figure release there was much speculation about what the man
had in store for us. Unlike with yesterdays crazychild, no pics had
leaked out of todays figure, so we were all very curious. What awaited
fans was a very pleasent surprise, Lau's new vinyl figure Cat
is The real-life Cat signed each box as it went out. She had quite a chore when KidRobot arrived to collect their editions! |
HOT TOYS Hot Toys has also been hard at work for the Con and were showing off several upcoming figures. The one we're most excited about here at KidRobot has got to be from Elphonso Lam, the man responsible for the awesome Punk Rock Cowboy. Elphonso has 2 new 12-inch style figures/statues with minimal articulation and lots of piercings, spikes bondage gear, and attitude coming soon that we can't wait to get our hands on. Elphonso also teamed up with Zero to release Uncle Damn, a heavy metal Uncle Sam looking dude chilling in a throne while making it clear what the world can go do with itself.
Other items on display at Hot Toys included: Cute little block flat guy name Monster Jr., designed by Ah Hing. Brothersworker Storm and Must, a crossover with the masterminds at Brothersfree. Finally a new Gundam figured, Char Aznable. |
CHING & CO. / JASON CHOY Ching&Co finally released Potato Wheel- the long awaited follow-up to the classic Ching-Head figure. The Ching-Head is a great design, so the new figure had a lot to live up to. Jason Choy was clearly up for the challenge, the Potato Wheel figure is worthy successor to the original. |
ABNORMAL HOBBY AbNormal Hobby had a selection of figures that we can't wait to get our hands on. Starting with 5 different light saber weilding skateboarders in action poses. Then there is a cigar puffing Wise Guy in a track suit (plug it in and his head and hands light up!), and finally an incredibly detailed statue of professional skater Kien Lieu (who also made an appearance at the show) on a throne. |
SIMON WONG & SUGOI Some of ourabsolute favorite
figures are by Hong Kong born, British educated designer Simon
Wong. After working as lead designer for major clothing
labels such as Esprit and CK, Simon has turned to 12" design with
a vengence and blessed us with truly remarkable figures.
Another unique aspect of Simon's characters is that they have real personality, and that personality is much less agressive than standard Toycon fair. Simon told us that he wanted the character's expressions to be real, much less angry than those of other figures in the show. Abstractions like Ando's gold hair add a hip edge to these figures' character. Expect a lot more from Simon and his partners -- many more ftop-secret figures are on their way. |
SPANKY (Japan) Spanky/Headlock Studios is always a favorite with the KidRobot staff. The designs are insanely orginal and the figures have a high production quality. Spanky didn't disappoint this year with three clever new characters to add to your collection. Jack Frey is a hilarious big elephant sitting on his rump with X-ed out eyes (note the sold out sign. That's because KidRobot bought all of 'em up immediately upon seen them!). Halloween Spumkin is a top hat wearing, skull cane totin', Jack-O-Lantern. Finally there is Wheelie Ant which is like, um, an ant on wheels with a good dose of Spanky dopeness. New variants of Micro & Underson, Spumkin, and Ray the Aerosol plus new Spanky key chains were all also availible! You'll be able to find all of the above on KidRobot now or in the very near future (as soon as FedEx can get it to our warehouse!) |
