What was for most Hong Kong-nese just another HUMID Friday in the city, was
for us here at Kidrobot the exciting start of August TOYCON. Arriving
later than planned on day one, I was greeted by the already long queue for
Michael Lau's release for day one, the highly anticipated CC19 Junkie
figure. A great homage to his great friend.
It was interesting to see who was and was not in attendance this year,
everyone mentioned how it was a smaller show this time. There were less
booths with majors like Medicom MIA, however there were LOADS of people, ALL
taking photos, and some buying. Lau, Brothersworker and Spanky, for sure,
sold out of most everything, Newcomer Steven Lee of Steven House, had new
figures fresh on his own that also sold out very quickly.
Brothersworker and their incredible Brothersrobber deserve a big robot
thanks for looking out, and their photographer for all, MONEY, made a grand
new appearance, along with their FLY new BJ Hammer Vinyl figure. Also
separately was a whole booth dedicated to their Lipton crossover mini and
Lipton's tea of course. Also a bit on the crossover tip was the amazing
ITRangers crew, Repping the Sony broadband company So-Net, but don’t be
fooled, they meant business, with hella fresh new ci-boys; a crossover with
ThreeZero and some ill new Monsters, and those 12" Ci-Boys, jeez! More
thanks are in order, for reals!
Another newcomer this year was the combo booth of Achy Breaky toys, Biddies,
Strange Co. and Friends With You, Americans holding it down! Ming next door
at Comix Box, blew things up with the continuation of his series, that
flocking kills me every time, better cop 'em now!
Koobos and 12" figures were beautifully displayed for the '70's "Super
Inframan" series, the kids over at Most Wanted released their first figure
from the series, the Police Man. The amazing Simon Wong/POSSE gang showed
off their fashion series, including fashion jeans for your 12", and also
their incredible Soldier 13 series.
